Subdivision Name Standards
The following subdivision naming standards are intended to prevent the creation of duplicate names and better facilitate locating plats in city and county databases.
- No all CAPS in Plattracker but may be used on the mylar
- No punctuation or symbols (e.g. commas, periods, @, #, etc.)
- No articles at the beginning of a name (e.g. A, An, The, etc.)
- No proper names (John Smith)
- No numbers at the beginning of a name
- No numbers indicating a phase or non‐contiguous developments Section numbers can only be used if the plat is out of a general plan.
- No street address at the beginning of a name
- No street intersections at beginning of a name Street names may be used in a plat name if the plat has frontage on that street.
- No lot and block as subdivision name
- No abbreviations unless commonly known or a company name
- Street Dedication Plats: Street name + street dedication + section number. Planner should describe extents of dedication in Staff Notes section of Plat Tracker file, OR Street name at Street name+ dedication
- Schools: District Name + Name of School (HISD Harvard Elementary School, or Tomball ISD Middle School no. 14)
- MUDs: County Name/Development Name + District Name + Service type (Harris County MUD no 10 Water Plant no 4)
- Replat format: Partial replats of single family subdivisions with separately filed deed restrictions must be sequentially numbered referring back to the original plat name. When out of a larger tract the subdivision name should begin with the general plan name.
